I’m just your average Native American, half Plains Cree, half Mohawk, rez-livin’, single motherin’, IT instructin’, sci-fi lovin’ woman who just so happens to love knittin’, hockey and baseball.

Oh yeah, and I'm totally made of awesome.

I love my BlackBerry!

I love my BlackBerry.  Say what you will about BlackBerries:  that they’re buggy, that your little Windows Mobile OS phone is way better, or  your iPhone kills the BlackBerry, or whatever.  But you know what?  I do not care.  I love my little BlackBerry Pearl.  In fact, when I and if I get to “upgrade” this winter I’ll most likely stick with the BlackBerry family and probably go with a Storm or the Curve.

One of the great things about the BlackBerry is that it’s a Smartphone.  Smartphones, at their very core are tiny computers, and when you think of them that way, well then, you can see why I love them so damned much!  But what is it about computers that are so much fun?  It isn’t just the hardware – especially not in smartphones – because the hardware is so small and proprietal; no, it’s the applications, or “apps” that make smartphones so fun.

So, what are apps? Well, they’re programs, software. Software is what makes any computer interesting. It’s also what can make a computer so frustrating. :P Your computer is only as good as the software that is installed.

Back to the BlackBerry though for a moment … I have a couple of BlackBerry apps I’d like to go over.  After all, like I said, your computer is only as useful as what it runs.  If you’re installing useless applications, or the applications don’t work the way they’re meant to, well then, your computer is rendered useless.  So today, I’m going to talk about my favourite BlackBerry applications.  Yaaaaaay!

Now, as I’ve previously mentioned, I love social networking.  Which if you’ve done your homework, your BB is always connected to the data network (as long as you have a signal) and therefore you can conceivably be always connected to your social networks.  And guess what, BlackBerry has a host of apps that are geared towards making that a reality.   And the following are a few of my favourites that I’ve either tried and loved, felt a little meh on and one I’m crazy looking forward to …

I’m back!

OMG! I finally got my BlackBerry back! Except it isn’t *my* BlackBerry. After waiting all this time, they just gave me a new one. How lame is that?

This new one is alright though. It’s grey as opposed to the amethyst one I had dubbed Elvira. So this one is named NX-1501. If you don’t know why, don’t ask. lol

In slightly less geeky tones, the ring tone is the Hockey Theme. Still geeky, but more sports than Trek. :P

But the best part? I’m doing this update on my phone! Woo! I installed a WordPress blog updater app and so far it is pretty dang cool. Hopefully this will mean more updates. Go me!

That’s all for now since I’m at work. Hee.

The Last Saskatchewan Pirate

The Jolly Roger on the River Saskatchewan

The Jolly Roger on the River Saskatchewan

Today (Sept 19) is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

ARRRRR!

I told the kids this morning before my sister and nephew left for a mini-road trip, and wouldn’t you know it, the kids decided to surprise me with my very own Jolly Roger.  It came complete with sails made from mini Saskatchewan flags.  I laughed so hard because it totally reminded me of the song The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by the Arrogant Worms, a bar band from Regina.  The hilarious part is, they’d never heard of that song before!

‘An it’s a heave-ho, high-ho, coming down the Plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it’s a ho-hey, high-hey, farmers bar your doors

When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina’s mighty shores.
Arr!

It was a lovely bit of serendipity, so I bought and downloaded the song from iTunes to show to my daughter.  lol  She got a real kick out of it.  I highly recommend it to everyone, actually.

I hope the song link works.  lol I’m on dial-up and I can’t check to see if it does.  Hell, took  me nearly 2 hours to download the song from iTunes this morning!  CRAZY!  Taken me nearly 4 hours now just to download an updated version of iTunes for my 64-bit computer downstairs that doesn’t have a dial-up modem.  *sigh*

I mean … ARRRRRRGH!  :P

Holy crap, it’s September …

Me and my red bandana ...

Me and my red bandana ...

*looks under shoe for August*  Nope, not there …

Dang, man.  The summer totally got away  on me.  Partly because I think it never really got here in the first place.  And for all the cold weather, we finally had a couple of really gorgeously hot days … in September.  It’s like the ultimate tease.  Oh Mother Nature, you evil woman.

And even amidst the warm weather, I was watching the leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow and the geese begin their annual trip south.  It doesn’t really seem fair.  Also, I am not looking forward to winter this year.  Especially not after last year’s marathon season of snow.  Oi.

So here we are, September has snuck up on me, school is in full swing, and I’m already half-way to a nervous break down.  lol  I’m teaching 3 classes this year and holy, is it tough.  I’m already confusing my classes.  I forget which class I’ve discussed which topic.  It’s good times.  :P  Only, not really.

Add to the stress of work the fact that we had 3 flat tires in two weeks.  WOOWOO!  So now we have to buy new tires because ours are shot.  Except it’s too early for winter tires, and but it’s so close to winter, we have to buy winter tires.  So this means, we have to buy 2 complete sets of tires.  All-seasons to get us to winter, and a set of winter tires once winter gets here.  UGH.  And I’m the sole-income at the moment.  Blah.  I’m not writing this so people can feel sorry for me, just writing it for the record.

Anyhoot, the plus side of all this is that I’m rediscovering the awesomeness of baking.  Since we can’t afford to buy bakery goodies anymore, I am baking goodies at home again.  I made some loverly homemade oatmeal cookies.  They were tasteh!  Some I made plain and a few I tossed in a couple of dried cranberries.  Ooh they were delicious!  Thankfully, there are a few more still.  :D

I also, for the first time ever, made bread this weekend.  I think I will make more this upcoming weekend, but I will most definitely begin earlier in the day!  I started my experiment at 7pm which was a terrible mistake.  I ended up waiting until almost midnight to take it out of the oven.  Ugh.  Never again!  But alls well that ends well.  :D  It was awesome.  I can’t wait to eat more.  In fact …

Oh yes, and the above picture?  I dressed up my daughter and took pictures of her.  lol  She was my little model.  I got the idea listening to ‘Me and Bobby McGhee’ by Janis Joplin.  Y’know the lines:

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna,
I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues.
Windshield wipers slapping time, I was holding Bobby’s hand in mine,
We sang every song that driver knew.

And since her guitar was red, I thought it would be so perfect!  *happy sigh*  I love that song.  The pictures turned out so cute.  Anyhoot … I should go.  I should also take more pictures of the kids like that some day.  They’re so beautiful and make such lovely little models.  :)

My ‘snuggle bunny’ …

So, I got to knittin’ again and came up with this little number over the weekend:

Snuggle Bunny

Snuggle Bunny

Cute, no?  I thought so too.  :)  She really seemed to like it.  Enough to sleep in it anyway.  And then wear it to school the next day.  And the day after that again.  :P

I am planning on knitting or making gifts for everyone for Christmas this year.  Money is pretty tight for my small family this year, so handmade gifts are on order for everyone.

AND  YES I PLAN THIS FAR AHEAD FOR HOLIDAYS.  I already have half my Thanksgiving menu finished.  :)
