• where the rez meets the virtual world …

I’m just your average Native American, half Plains Cree, half Mohawk, rez-livin’, single motherin’, IT instructin’, sci-fi lovin’ woman who just so happens to love knittin’, hockey and baseball.

Oh yeah, and I'm totally made of awesome.

Novel Update

And by novel, I mean my writing, not as in amusing.  Although, I suppose it may be amusing … but not really.

So, here’s the deal.   Every November there’s this challenge called NaNoWriMo which is short for National Novel Writing Month.  It started in the US, but has since expanded to an international thing thanks to the internet.  Now, all over the world, aspiring and established novelists attempt to write a 50,000 word novel (or novella) in the space of one month – 12:00:01 November 1 to 12:00:00 November 30 to be more exact.  (This is an annual event should you find yourself reading this and feel so inclined to participate yourself.)

I’ve participated a few times over the years since discovering it myself, but I have yet to win.  BUT … this past year is the closest I’ve ever come at roughly 10K words.  Most years I make it to about 5k or less, so I was pretty proud of myself.  Even better, I kept writing.  I’m now up to 15,000 words and counting!

In fact, I’m about halfway through my first draft.  I am already making plans for the second draft too!  I’m so exciting about this story, I can’t even begin to tell you.  :D

That isn’t even the best part … the best part is that I have plans to write MORE once I’m finished this story!  SEQUELS!  And another TWO stories separate from this one altogether!  I don’t even know where these stories are coming from!  It’s like I just started writing and all these ideas started coming out.  It’s so weird.

Of course, I may all be for naught as I don’t have any plans to actually publish any of these.  lol  I may not even get to writing anything other than the one novel I’m currently working on.  For now, I’m just enjoying the creative outlet.  I guess we’ll just have to see.  *sigh*

Happy Halloween

I know Halloween is tomorrow, but I’ll be pretty busy tomorrow as I’m taking the suv in to Saskatoon to get it serviced and then we’re spending the weekend and we’re planning to do all sorts of things, such as take the kids trick or treating in my old neighbourhood, check out the NaNoWriMo meet there and possibly check out the FSIN powwow.  Should be good times!

I hope everyone has a great and spooky weekend!

NaNoWriMo Resources: Technology!

Okay,  so I love technology.  But you knew that.  I love software, I love hardware … I love it all.  This year, I’m using my new HP Touchsmart to write my nano novel.  I’m also putting to use some new applications (both online and desktop).  And even though I’m not sharing my novel here, I will share those applications with you.

yWriter

yWriter was introduced to me on the Saskatchewan forums of nanowrimo, and as soon as I installed it, I was immediately in love.  It is software that allows you to plot by chapter and scene.  You can plan your characters’ biographies, goals (which is really important for plot reasons), descriptions, pictures, etc.  You can even include locations and pictures of those locations!  It’s bloody brilliant!

I think the best part is that you can tag everything which really helps when you’re trying to make associations between things and you don’t want to forget those associations.

There are plenty more features that I am probably forgetting, so it’s probably best you just download it and use it!  It’s BRILLIANT and so useful!  :D

Morphases

K, so when you’re planning out your characters, have you ever just seen them so clearly in your mind and just wish you could show someone? But the best you could is find an actor or model that’s a close approximation of them? And it’s just not quite the same?

Well, there’s this online software that enables you to … oh hell, they explain it better than I could:

Morphases is an online next generation software in face manipulation. It allows user to modify and create human faces from different elements in real time with almost an unlimited power. All elements are divided individually and stored into genebank.

I plan on using it to create images of my characters since I came up with my nanowrimo story in a dream and the characters are all original, and I obviously know exactly what they look like. :)

Write or Die

K, so my friend sent me this link last night. It’s soooo deliciously evil, I just had to share it with everyone! *evil!glee* It’s a web application (although there are plans for a desktop version) “that encourages writing by punishing the tendency to avoid writing.” It does so by offering negative consequences for not writing such as a pop-up reminding the author to continue writing after a short period of inactivity (the gentle mode), or playing an “annoying” sound file (the more aggressive normal mode), or by undoing all your writing unless you continue writing (the deliciously evil kamikaze mode).

The idea is that “A tangible consequence is more effective than an intangible reward.”

So, if you’re like me, and self-inflicted guilt isn’t enough of a drive to write, maybe this is the application for you! I’m adding this to my nanowrimo arsenal this year!

NaNoWriMo update

I am sort of bailing on nanowrimo this year.  I’m still participating, but I won’t be sharing my progress here.  Since I’m tackling it under a genre I’ve never written in before, I just … well, I just sort of want to do it with abandon.  If I’m happy with it, I’ll share it here.  But until then, I’m just keeping it to myself and a few trusted friends.  :)

My reasoning is this blog is mostly about technology and life on the reserve and this little venture of mine is neither.  So …

But I do have some nanowrimo related technology I do want to share, so that post shall be coming soon!  Probably tomorrow as I’ve spent enough time online today.  :P  I’m home sick with the boy and I have now worked up a roaring headache.  ugh.

Wish me luck!

Another year … another NaNoWriMo?

nano_09_red_participant_120x240.pngI’m toying with the idea of participating in NaNoWriMo again.  I’ve never actually finished.  Hell, I’ve never written more than 5k or so.  I pretty much fail at writing  large amounts of text.

Wait … what’s NaNoWriMo, you ask?  Well!  Glad you asked!  ;)

NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month.  It’s a yearly challenge that takes place starting at midnight November 1st and ends, ostensibly, on November 30th at midnight, during which you are challenged to write a 50,000 word novel.  It’s all about quantity, not about quality!  The idea is that you just get it done.

I’ve participated in previous years, but I’ve failed miserably.  lol  I’m not really great at writing long bits of text.  I love writing short character pieces.  And yet, my best ideas are all about the long plots, but I can’t seem to flesh them out and give them the life I’d like them to have.  *sigh*
