A belated Happy Canada Day to one and all!

Yeah, I’m like – *checks calendar* – 5 days late.  Meh.  I had a busy weekend.

Over the weekend I celebrated my boy’s 6th birthday, celebrated Canada Day at Diefenbaker Park with my family, helped my sister move into her new place, cleaned my room, and went to a powwow in Poundmaker.  Good times.  But as you can clearly see, it was a very busy weekend.

So, let’s go over this one at a time, shall we?  :)

My little boy is getting bigger!  How did he get to be SIX already?!  Oh, man.  Crazy!  He had a good day though.  He woke up to his first present, a video game I bought him called Ninjabreadman.  :P  He’s totally in love.  I had given him his other video game as an early present because I couldn’t wait.  lol  It was a Where’s Waldo game.  Both are for the Wii console.

On July 1st (aka Canada Day here in the Great White North), we packed our SUV with my sister’s things and moved her out to Saskatoon, which is also where there’s a big to-do every year in Diefenbaker Park with fireworks, a free concert, food booths, and all sorts of awesome things.  It was a bit pricey, but anything for my handsome little guy!

We had a lot of fun, and I got some great pictures of the fireworks, and the kids had a ball on the rides.  Not to mention, the food was aaaaaawesome!  :D

I’m sad that my boy is getting so big, but I’m also happy to see him grow and evolve over these past few years.  It’s a true blessing.  I thank his parents every day for their gift to me.

*sniffles*

Anyhoo … now that my one sister (the youngest one) is out and into her new place, I have my OTHER nephew coming in.  :)  At least for a few days.  My older sister is off to Hawaii for her brother’s wedding (no relation between that brother and I – long story), so my younger sister (the one who lives with me) are going to keep her son for a bit.  Confused yet?  Excellent.  lol

Let’s just go with this: I have a ton of sisters and lovely nephews, all of whom I love and cherish deeply.  lol  So yes, I’ve been terribly busy lately!  And in between all this, my sister (the one who lives with me) hurt her ankle and has been hobbling around on crutches, my kids finished the school year (both passed – yay!), and I went to Calgary for the conference AND to Meadow Lake for a day to teach an ITE class.  WHEW!

Oh!  And my computer at home up and died.  I still need to fix that. :/

I think I need to lie down for a bit …

Semi-Update

I know I promised an update, but it’s been a very busy week for me.  Busy month, really.  And here it is, July already.  Crazy!

Proper update tomorrow.  I SWEAR!  I have a whole whack of interesting things coming up this week month.  I have an entire backlog of cool posts planned, and I cannot wait to get them out!  Just see what I have planned:

  • Conference in Calgary with Cisco
  • PC v. Mac debate: Yes, I’m a PC
  • My boy’s birthday! He turned 6 on Canada Day!
  • My novel(s), and what I have planned for them
  • A webseries I want to write/film some day
  • Creative Commons Licensing

I have a whole lot to say on each of these, and I can’t wait to get these posts out.  I’ll probably start with the birthday one tomorrow.  :)  My little man.  *sigh*  When did he get so big?!

Until then …

May the Fourth Be With You …

Happy Star Wars Day, everyone!

(In case you didn’t get it … It’s May 4th … May the Force (Fourth) be with you … har har.)

Anyhoot … I think the weirdest part of today is that someone actually tried to get Jedi recognised as an official religion.  lol  Oh intarwebs, how I love you.

Here are some fun and silly links I’ve encountered today in honour of the day:

Short Version: I had so much fun!! I totally want to do that again! (I can see how people can become addicted to going to cons. lol)

Long Version …

Friday

This wasn’t a con day, it was our travel day. We didn’t end up leaving the rez until much later than we’d anticipated which meant we didn’t arrive in Calgary until 3am. CRAZY! I’m surprised I made it. I must have been cruising on pure adrenaline and caffeine courtesy of Tim Hortons. :s

Saturday

Man, the kids were PUMPED! :D

And to be completely honest, so was I! :D :D :D

We got up early (I had a grand total of 5 hours of sleep urgh). My girl wore a cute little made up costume of just black and a cape (with the intention of getting her face painted like Darth Maul, and my boy wore his brand new canvas hightops with Marvel characters on the sides. I just stuck to my Serenity tee (courtesy of former LJer K) and my Where’s Waldo-esque knitted toque since it was pretty darned cold that morning.

Of course once we got there, my girl saw the work presented by the The Tattooed Lady and went with some beautiful red sorceress make up instead. :) And my boy went with Avatar. lol We bought the movie on the way up and it was INSTANT OBSESSION for him. :D

Paul McGillion @CalgaryExpoFrom there on in it was mayhem and geekery! And total technology fail for me AND my sister as we were so exhausted the previous night when we got in, we forgot to charge our phones and I forgot to bring my camera and my daughter forgot to charge her camera batteries! We barely got any pictures! The only pictures I got were these:

YES! That’s me, my daughter and Paul McGillion (left)! :D :D :D

He accused me of being my daughter’s sister. :D And yes, it totally made my day! He’s a GREAT actor and even looked “startled” when I said I was her mother and said my real age. lol Bless the man. ?

And this is a guy dressed as Ten (right)! His costume was pretty good, so I took a picture for my daughter since I saw him when I was standing in line for the ATM and she was with my sister at the time. (OMG there were NOT enough ATMs there. Only 3 for the THOUSANDS of people, AND I hear they were cracked. :( Not good.)Tenth Doctor

This is a picture of Chris Giarrusso (left) drawing my boy his favourite hero, Spider-man! Eeeeeeeeeeee! SO PRECIOUS!! My boy was so excited! And then he drew my girl Harley Quinn! :D

Hmmm … What else … I got a bunch of autographs …

OH YEAH! I totally met the guys from Kirby Krackle! They’re GREAT! We chatted about their songs and how awesome they are. lol It was cool, and they were totally nice about me being all fangirly. lol Which was cool of them. I tried not to weird them out, and when I started to embarrass my daughter, we left. :P But then I ran back and got an autograph. lol

OH! And then we went and met Alina Pete from Weregeek! She was kickass! She signed my daughter’s comics for her and drew her a little Sarah picture! Yay! THEN it was my daughter’s turn to be all fangirly. :D

OHHHHHH! And we totally met LANDO! Okay, it was Billy Dee Williams, but in my head it was Lando Calrissian. lol Except it was a bit disappointing since we stood in line for like AGES, and when he finally showed up (LATE), he was totally spacing out and the handler people were like spelling shit out for him. I think he was stoned or something. :/ I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was for medical reasons though. :P

My boy and my sister wandered off together at some point because they were all “ooooooooh!” and WE were all “oooooooooooh!” in different directions. After that, I’m not sure what they were up to. :/

We had this whole plan for the panels and ended up missing EVERY SINGLE panel because there were so many awesome things and people there. :D We didn’t even mind.

Well, except for we hadn’t realized that we should have lined up like (probably) HOURS in advance for the Leonard Nimoy panel and ended up getting the mad cuts on that one. :( It was the ONLY one we actually lined up for and we got barred out for too many people. LAME! My daughter cried. Like hard. :(

So to make it up to her, we bought her an anime costume to wear the next day. :)

*thinky face* I’m sure there was more, but I was (and still am) sooooo tired, I can’t remember right now. If I do recall anything, I’ll update.

But then we got back to my sister’s place.  *sigh*  And here’s where the story takes a tragic turn for the worse.  I’ll have to explain in another post which will follow tomorrow.  Suffice to say … it isn’t good news.  :(  Just send happy thoughts to my daughter who lost her beloved kitten on Saturday night.  We spent all of Sunday making her feel better.

Sunday

Not quite so bright and early, we were at the con pretty late the next day. We had decided the day before we were tossing the plans to see the panels out the window in favour of just visiting with booths and shopping and wandering and taking in as much as possible. This time, I remembered my camera, I bought new batteries for my daughter’s camera … but our phones were even even worse shape than the day before. My plans for tweeting the whole thing? Bleh. Ah well.

So, off we went! We split up again (which was a TERRIBLE idea since we didn’t have our phones!) and we off to see what we could see. Again, since my boy was with my sister, I’m still not sure what they all saw. lol

I left my camera at home, so I’ll have to update my post with pictures later. :P

I did most of my shopping on this day as well, so bear with me … I’m totally broke now. lol

Day 2 had me meeting Aaron Douglas though! He is very handsome up close, you guys! Liek whoah! And he’s super nice. :)

And … I went back to harass the Kirby Krackle guys a bit more because I realized that I totally didn’t get my friend  an autograph! I told them that she’d kill me if I didn’t. lol

d20 purse from the conventionOH OH OH! And I got a way deadly d20 purse (left)! It’s a little rough around the edges, but the guy lowered his price and I figured I can fix it up to make sure it doesn’t disintegrate on me. :D

OH OH OH! AND I bought a pair of knee high brown leather boots (right) for $35!! SO IN LOVE! I’m wearing them right now with a purple caftan/tunic type shirt. *twirls*

OH AND GET THIS GUYS … WE MET LEONARD NIMOY!! That’s right! My girl and I met SPOCK 1.0! William Bell himself! XD And we didn’t have to pay a dime! lol

We were looking for my sister and my boy when my girl goes, “Hey, Mom, look. The line up is really short. We should just go.” And she was so heartbroken from yesterday, I said, “Okay.”

We went up, and we get the front and the guy says “$60 for autographs.” And I said, “How about if we just want a quick picture?” and I held up my camera. And he says “The picture line-up is over there. And I look over and OMG you guys. It’s like a kilometer long. So I said, “How about if we just want to say hi?” And the guys laughed and said, “I’m not going to stop you.”

SO WE RAN UP AND MET LEONARD NIMOY! :D :D :D :D :D

And he gave us a fist bump and said my daughter was cute! XD

And then we ran away giggling like the mad idiots we are! I have no autograph or photographic evidence to prove it, but we totally met him!

You may now proceed to be jealous.

ETA: I totally forgot!  My daughter got to meet one of her favourite personalities from the SPACE Channel’s show InnerSPACE (left): Teddy!  She was so excited!  He even gave her an autograph!  Yaaaaaaaaay!  He was really nice to her.  lol

And after that? Uhm … OOOOOOOOOOOOOH! I totally met Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics! He was ADORABLE! Apparently he sold out of tshirts the first day so he bought tshirts and underpants and fabric paint at Walmart and made his own to sell on Sunday! I totally bought one that said “THERE / now I’m not naked anymore” He kept trying to talk me out of it saying there would be a much nicer one available on the website soon, but I told him “But YOU made this one. That makes it, like, 500 times way more awesome!” So I took a picture of him holding it up to prove he made it and therefore that much more geekier. lol

Of course, on the way home I realized I should have had him SIGN IT! DUR! Ah well.

Uhm … hmmm … what else?

OH! There were like a MASS of awesome costumes! I loved them all so much! I only got a few pictures. Of course … will have to post them later when I get home to my camera.

Uhm … what else? Hmmm … I think that’s it. For now at least. I should probably do more work. :P Seeing as I totally slept in this morning.

Freakin’ took 7 hours to drive home and I didn’t get in until after midnight, but I would totally do it again in a heartbeat! Spent way too much on autographs, cute pictures, doodles, costumes, facepainting, etc.

ETA: OH YES! There were a LOT of really cute guys there. Doods! LIKE A LOT! Whiplash! lol Yaaaaay!

Hmm … I hear there’s an anime-con in Edmonton later this summer …

My poor boy …

My nephew is sick.  Been running a fever for the past few days, and consequently, I’m exhausted.  *sigh*  Nothing of interest to report.  He has been off to see the doctor, and all the appropriate medications have been prescribed.  He is resting and I am off to bed.

Caught a few of the speed skating races tonight.  Congratulations to the young Marianne St-Gelais for her Silver Medal!  What a 20th birthday she must be having!

And now, before I fall asleep at my keyboard …

Everything old is new again …

Ah the benefits of having geeky children.  :)

This weekend I introduced my kids to Labyrinth.  I happened across it on Blu-ray at Walmart this weekend when we were on a pet food run (it has only just recently occured to me that we have SIX pets now! WTF!), and I snapped it up.  I mean, it’s LABYRINTH!  It’s always been a favourite of mine since I was a kid.

I hadn’t seen it in years though, and I’m so glad I did see it in that bin because it has re-awakened a love I had long forgotten.  *happy sigh*  It was much like when I bought them Dark Crystal a few months ago.  Just a flood of warm memories and love of the fantasy genre.  How I missed those movies.  And of course, my daughter was right there with me.

She is definitely cut from my cloth, that’s for sure.  She especially loved Labyrinth, though, since there was music involved.  But, I think she was a bit traumatized by Jareth’s tight pants.  lol  All the same, I think she is a fan.  My boy,  not as much, but he enjoyed himself anyway.  I think he’s more of a Star Wars kind of kid.

That’s okay though, I love Star Wars too.  ;)  And I’m more than happy to sit and play Lego Star Wars and Batman for hours with him.

It’s so much fun experiencing all these old fandoms with my kids, for the first time again through their eyes.  It does this old geek’s heart good.  :D

A Countdown Begins

Another countdown has begun: my daughter’s birthday. That’s right, I’ve already begun the preparation for her big day. This year looks to be a busy one for us as her birthday once again fall son a Good Friday. She was born on Good Friday, and this of course means it is Easter weekend.

It also happens to be the opening weekend of the 2010 First Nations Winter Games in Saskatoon. And if you recall (assuming if you’re reading this, you follow this blog), she has made the badminton team for the Thunderchild/Onion Lake team. Funnily enough, I’m from TC, her dad is from OL. Yay?

Backstage Pass

Last year's invitations

Anyway, I haven’t figured out that particular weekend, but I have figured this much out so far: we’re probably going to just have a small pizza party in town during the week so her friends from school can attend. Our roads are terrible during April and I’m sure her townie friends aren’t used to rez roads, much less ours. :P Secondly, I’ve come up with the theme: Comic Books! The invitations will look like comic book covers, with her as the hero and my nephew as her sidekick. It’s going to look AMAZING!

I’ve already started working on how to figure out the software to make a picture of them look like comic book images. We’ve also already started working on outfits for post-modern, possibly post-apocalyptic heroes. I can’t wait! *flail*

Ooh! And *shhhhh* … I’ve already ordered her comic book themed birthday presents! XD

Last year’s invitations looked liked VIP/backstage passes to a concert since it was a rock star theme. This year’s invites will blow those out of the water! *bounce*

I think I might do the same for my nephew’s party if these turn out. He’ll be Captain Canuck! Oh my little Canada Day, special little guy! o/

The highs and lows of motherhood …

Yesterday was a quite a day!  My sister, daughter, and cousin’s son went to Onion Lake for tryouts to the Saskatchewan First Nation Winter Games and then I went to take my nephew up north to see my brother, his dad.

bad road conditions

Bad road conditions

While it was all good news on their end (I’ll get to that in a second), my boy and I had to turn back because we hit a blizzard just on the other side of St. Walburg.  I’d have kept driving since I’ve driven in worse and far less reliable vehicles, but it was just me and the boy and I was more concerned about the drive back than the drive there as it would be dark and there would be even less traffic.  And believe me, that’s a barely traveled, very secluded stretch of highway on the best of days.   *sigh*  (Oh and the picture?  That was taken after the plow had passed.  Crazy, eh?)

I felt so terrible because my brother hasn’t had the opportunity to spend much time with the boy in months and he was really excited about seeing his son.

I’m glad we did turn back though because even though the weather was better nearby home, the winds were CRAZY.

Also, later last night, I remembered we are supposed to take the Yubee in today to get the front in fixed!  ACK!  I can’t imagine what would have happened if we had gotten stuck out in the bush somewhere.  Ugh.

Okay, so on to the good news …

My daughter and (cousin’s) nephew made the badminton team!  Well, they made the team by default as so few people showed up that they made the team just for trying out.  lol  I’m supposed to be honest about why because my daughter said so.  :P  But I’m crazy proud of her anyway.

She almost didn’t go at all.  She had nearly psyched herself out before she even left, so her even trying out was a big step for her.  My daughter is convinced she’s not an athlete, so she won’t even try sometimes.  I told her she has to try before she gives up.  Her father’s side of the family is very athletic, so maybe she got lucky.  Plus, badminton was the only thing I was good at in high school.  lol

So now we have to figure out how to get her and my nephew back and forth to practice in Onion Lake for the next two months.  :/  Oh and my sister too since she’s their coach.  Who doesn’t actually know anything about badminton.  But since she’s the only one who they can count on for anything, she’s volunteered.  lol  I think I might volunteer as well since I played in high school.  Even though I haven’t played in *cough* years.  May as well since my sister has to work too.  We’ll just take turns taking time off of work for this.

We’ll make it work.  Like today.  My sister is taking time off to take the car in, we’re pulling my daughter out of school and taking her to get new sneakers for the games (she had to try out in socks and over-sized sweatpants) and a raquet  for practice.

Oh and if you’d like to learn more about the games, here’s a LINK: 2010 First Nations Winter Games

Oh geez … I’d better get off my butt and start getting ready!   Later, taters!

YouTube FTW!

So I’ve finally gotten around to setting up a YouTube account for myself and uploading (aka archiving) some old home videos I have of the kids.  The funny thing is, you’d think I’d have a million of them being the geek/tech addict I am, but the truth is, I’m always so tied up in the moment, I rarely ever think to turn on the video camera of my phone or camera.

And now, my nice camera doesn’t even have video.  *woe*

But … I do have some lovely and mostly hilarious video of the kids.  Seriously, these two crack me up on a daily basis.  If they didn’t make me laugh the way they do, I’d probably go all nuts when they acted like little monsters.  lol  Ah the glamorous life of a mom. (And just when I went to post this, they came running downstairs fighting. lol  They have awesome timing.)

Anyway, this particular video is of the kids doing … well, to be honest, I have no idea what they’re doing.  lol  I think they’re conducting some sort of tent revival thing.  They’re so weird.

The End is near …

Ooooh … how ominous! Well, the end of the year anyway. :P

Yesterday was my sister’s birthday, and two days before that was my brother’s birthday, so … HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SARA AND MITCH! I love you both! Sara, your gift is coming tomorrow (when I get paid), and Mitch, your presents are in the box of gifts I sent last week. Enjoy!

I suppose the end of the year is a time to reflect on what’s transpired. Overall, I think this past year has been pretty phenomenal for my little family. I’m so thankful for what we’ve accomplished, for what we’ve been blessed with, and that we’ve done it all together.

This is the year that saw us get a real car. And despite the accident – oh, I forgot to post about that … Well, someone in town, who shall remain nameless here, backed into my sister when she was picking up the kids from school. It was the week earlier this month when we had a CRAZY cold spell and the plastic on the bumper/grill cracked and the whole front end just broke off including the fog lights. Urgh. But that’s part of the GOOD part of this year, believe it or not! The guy accepted full responsibility and his insurance is covering the whole of the repairs, AND thankfully, no one was injured! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

The best part? The Yubee still runs great. :D

This year I also got a raise, so money hasn’t been as tight as in previous years. Which was part of the reason I could afford our little Escape. I was also made a permanent employee which has taken a lot of weight off my shoulders in regards to the annual summer layoff anxiety spells I used to go through with this job. lol HUGE relief to say the least. Plus, I really love my job. I sort of feel like I’m finally hitting my stride. Even on days when I feel like doing a keyboard smash over something silly the interns have done (or more than likely, have neglected to do), I still love my job.

Oh! And my sister got a job at the hospital in town at the senior care centre! I think she really likes it there, and I know they really like having her there. I’m so terribly proud of her! She’s a few months away from completing her training for this job, but they hired her on based on her grades so far, and some of her hours will go towards her practicum. It’s so neat seeing her dressed in scrubs and hearing her stories when she comes home of all the cute elders there. I can tell she already loves her job too.

The kids started at a new school this year as well. So far, they seem to enjoy it. My daughter always has something to complain about, but now it seems she’s struggling to find things to complain about, which is good. :P My nephew really loves his teacher, and he seems to have made a few really good friends. It’s still their first year there, and so far so good. We’ll see.

And just when it seemed the year couldn’t get any better, we wrapped it up with my sister and her son spending Christmas with us for the first time. It was probably one of my most favourite Christmases ever. Most certainly a memory I’ll treasure forever. <3

Oh … and before I forget, I got Wii Fit for Christmas from Sara! Woo! Which I’m going to go play on before the kids get up because they keep hijacking it from me. Stupid Nintendo made it too fun. :P

I hope everyone has a lovely and safe New Years Eve! Tomorrow, we’re heading out to Edmonton to see Avatar! Wooooooo!
